Astrology of May 2022

May is an unsettled month astrologically. We’re in the eclipse season until May 22, overlapping with Mercury Retrograde (May 10-June 3). Three planets move into Aries in May – Venus, Jupiter and Mars! They bring a lot of optimistic, spontaneous and energetic energy. But considering Mercury Retrograde and the eclipses, that could result in some over-commitment, unfulfilled promises, and unsafe risk-taking. Save major decisions until the second week of June.

We may be tempted to “grab our slice of life” in May. Watch out for self-centered behaviours.

Jupiter changes signs and moves into Aries on May 10.  The time Jupiter changes signs always feels like a breath of fresh energy, because our luck shifts to another area of our life. Yes! Something to look forward to. For the world economy, it also means that new sectors will start flourishing. Oil and gas have gone through a boom during the time Jupiter was in Pisces. Now, the expansion could be experienced in the defense sector/military, base metals and construction.

On May 23, the Sun sextiles Jupiter. It’s one the most optimistic, luckiest days of the year. Charge a citrine with a strong intention for improved luck.

Even with Mercury Retrograde, May brings a lot of good planetary alignments for finances, business or career, especially during the first week of May.  A Jupiter-Pluto sextile can bring some favourable financial developments early that week.

May 14-19 may be the most challenging time of the month, with a tense Lunar Eclipse in Scorpio and a Mars-Neptune conjunction. Watch for possible floods or events concerning water.

The energies of optimism and confidence pick up again when Mars moves into Aries on May 24. It’s a very heroic energy, especially around the time Mars conjuncts Jupiter on May 29. The energy of courage and of possible acts of bravery is highlighted that week.

Eclipse Season In Progress

The Eclipse Season kicked off in late April when the energies were building to the New Moon/Solar Eclipse on April 30.

This year’s eclipses are happening in Taurus-Scorpio, which is another key theme of 2022.  These two are financial signs, so there may be some financial fallouts and changes.  Extreme weather patterns are also possible, as Taurus represents Mother Earth, and Uranus (shake-ups) is in Taurus this year as well, very active at the time of the eclipses.

Read more about the Eclipse Season here.

Jupiter’s Visit of Aries

Jupiter will exit the watery depths of Pisces and move into the action-oriented landscape on Aries on May 10.

Because of its retrograde motion, it will revisit Pisces briefly one more time, Oct. 28 to Dec. 20 2022, so if there are any unfinished spiritual or artistic pursuits you’ve been working on, the fall will bring another boost of the Piscean energy. It won’t be nearly as strong as what we’re experiencing this spring though.

Back to Aries, Jupiter will visit it on:

  • May 10 2022 -Oct. 27 2022
  • December 21 2022 – May 17 2023

Jupiter expands everything it touches, and here it will be waking up the enterprising and pioneering spirit.  More people might be starting their own business or becoming self-employed.  There could be more new construction, due to Aries’ association with construction and builders.

One thing that is not so great – Aries also rules the military, so everything related to the military can expand, from the manufacturing industries to war action, especially during the time Mars also moves into Aries:  May 24-July 4.

Jupiter in Aries is a great cycle to take charge of your life. Be bold. Don’t be afraid of new starts and new beginnings – says this energy.

Jupiter in Aries is great news for Aries, Leo, Sagittarius and Libra – or anyone with the Ascendant in these signs. There may be new opportunities heading your way!

Full Moon/Lunar Eclipse in Scorpio: May 15 9:14 p.m. PDT

Directly opposite and illuminated by the Taurus Sun, this Full Moon is all about blending the best qualities of Scorpio and Taurus. It’s a great Full Moon to bring peace and contentment (Taurus) and intense drive (Scorpio) into balance in your life.  Don’t forget to smell the roses!

It’s also a fantastic Full Moon to ask the Universe for help with letting go of compulsive behaviours, self-limiting beliefs, guilt – and debts!

Release heavy emotions that may be weighing you down, says this Full Moon. Release your self-limiting beliefs. They may be blocking you on your path.

While setting intentions on a New Moon/Solar Eclipse can be a risky (but also rewarding) proposition, Lunar Eclipses are a different matter! Don’t hesitate to use their energy to release what no longer serves you. My experience with it has been, it greatly helps to purge what you don’t want, and it doesn’t bring any “side effects”.

New Moon in Gemini, May 30 4:30 a.m. PDT

Phew! We will be out of the eclipse season by then.  It’s a great New Moon to set intentions for improved communication, and improved relationship with your siblings and neighbours, an increased social circle – and reduced stress when driving!

Mercury: Communication, Legal Contracts, Vehicles, Electronics and E-Commerce

And what about Mercury? Well….it’s slowing down in the skies as I write, preparing to turn retrograde on May 10. While retrograde, it will backtrack from Gemini to Taurus, encouraging us to integrate information and the news that has been coming at us from all angles it seems, from the ever accelerating information highway.

Mercury in Gemini can bring on mental overload. Try to shut off your electronic devices at least an hour before bedtime in the next few days. And not every text needs to be answered right away, either.

Did you ever sign up for an online course, zoomed through it, and then didn’t remember much about the content? It could be the course….or it could be our diminishing ability to integrate learning and experiences.

With this Mercury Retrograde, take the time to sit (Taurus) with the information coming at you (Gemini).  File away useful nuggets. Ponder “lessons learned”.  The world has gone through so much these past few years! There is a wealth of learning in that experience, but we need to slow down to process it. This is exactly what this Mercury Retrograde in Gemini/Taurus is inviting us to do.

News or information shared in the next couple of weeks may not be the “final cut”, either. Between the eclipses and Mercury Retrograde, more might come to light in late May – early June. If you have any major decisions to make, postpone them until the second week of June, if you can.

Key Dates (Pacific to Eastern Time. Note we will start feeling the energy for 1-2 days in advance of these dates).

May 5-6: Mercury sextile Venus. An excellent day for pleasant social communication, especially with your loved ones. Call your Mom (This is happening right before the Mother’s Day in North America! Nice). Have a good long gabbing session with a friend. Or your sweetheart.

May 6-14: Mercury is about to go retrograde, on May 10. Read the fine print and double-check all important plans and documents.

May 19: Mercury sextile Jupiter. A half-decent day for negotiations, contracts and presentations – BUT make sure you read the fine print and proofread your messages! If you started a negotiation on or around April 26-27, you could now have a chance to re-negotiate.

May 21: The Sun conjunct retrograde Mercury. Deep insights about the past 3 months are possible today. This is the only day during Mercury Retrograde when it’s actually good to START something related to communication, contracts, vehicles, electronics, or e-commerce.

May 22:  Mercury retrogrades into Taurus.

May 23: Mercury sextile Mars. A GREAT day for editing, revisions, and other types of rework.

May 25: Mercury trine Pluto. A very good day to schedule a cognitive therapy session, or to get to the bottom of something. Avoid manipulative behaviours though.

Venus: Love, Beauty, and Personal Values

After her auspicious visit of Pisces, Venus moves into fiery Aries on May 2. There is a lot to be said for this energy. It prompts us to be direct and honest about our needs, especially in romantic matters. Venus in Aries doesn’t sit back; she actively pursues what she wants.

Key Dates for Love and Romance (Pacific to Eastern time)

May 1: on the heels of her conjunction with Neptune and Jupiter on April 26 -April 30, Venus sextiles Pluto on May 1. Yes, it’s the eclipse season and the energies are unpredictable, but April 26 – May 1 still look pretty auspicious to me, for love or financial matters!

May 2: Venus moves into Aries.

May 15: Venus conjunct Chiron, hours before the Full Moon in Scorpio. It’s an auspicious day to release any blocks to financial prosperity or love, including past romantic disappointments or a negative body image.

May 23-24: Venus sextile Saturn. A good day to consider romantic or financial commitments. This is a very stable, grounding energy for love or finances. But, there could be some vague doubts about your worthiness. Push them off.

May 26-27: Venus square Pluto. It’s not a good day for financial investments. If there are any issues in your romantic relationship, they can erupt, too. If not looking for trouble, lay low. On the upside, it’s a great energy for make-up sex 😉

If you must go on a first date today, bear in mind that relationships started when Venus is challenged by Pluto can be very intense and passionate, but there can also be a lot of turbulent emotions and power struggles.

May 28: Venus moves into Taurus. She is very comfortable in this sensual sign that appreciates all the fine things in life. Her time in Taurus generally boosts all things financial.  Venus in Taurus also prompts you to love your body exactly as it is. Forget the pursuit of impossible perfection, says Venus in Taurus.  Your body is a thing of beauty, just as it comes.

Career, Business, and Money:

Jupiter and Pluto form a beneficial sextile this month. While it’s not a super powerful energy, it does boost career and business-oriented pursuits, especially if it hits your natal chart just right. It’s also a beneficial financial energy.

The first week of May in particular brings a lot of beneficial energies for career and business – as long as you’re prepared to expect the unexpected, since we’ll be right in the middle of the eclipse season!

Key dates (all for Pacific to Eastern Time):

April 29 - May 7: Jupiter sextile Pluto (exact on May 3). Beneficial for career, business, and financial undertakings.  There is a short but very beneficial opportunity period from May 1 5:04 p.m. to May 2 3:13 a.m. PDT. The waxing Moon in Taurus is very well positioned. Watch for financial or business opportunities – or initiate them.

May 4-7: another great planetary line-up for business or career. Mars sextiles Uranus on May 4, the Sun conjoins Uranus on May 5, and the Sun sextiles Mars on May 7. Perfect for brainstorming innovative ideas and making them happen.

May 17-18: Mars conjunct Neptune. Great for artistic and spiritual pursuits, and charity work. But, for everyone else, this day can bring low energy and some fog to push through.

May 19-22: another good period for career and business, even though Mercury is now retrograde, so read the important information carefully – don’t skim over the details. If you have a project already on the way though, May 19-22 is a great time to invest some energy into it.

May 19: the Sun trine Pluto, Mercury sextile Jupiter. A great day to tap into your personal power, or to have a powerful conversation with someone.

Charge a garnet or a tiger eye today with the strong intention to increase your personal power.

May 20: Sun enters Gemini. Happy Birthday Season to Gemini readers!

May 21: The Sun conjunct retrograde Mercury. This is the only day during Mercury Retrograde when it’s actually good to START something related to communication, contracts, vehicles, electronics, or e-commerce.

May 22: Mars sextile Pluto. A very productive energy to keep going on projects already started. It's also a great energy for leaders and taking leadership.

May 23: Sun sextile Jupiter! One of the most optimistic, luckiest days of the year. Charge a citrine with a strong intention for improved luck.

May 23: Mercury sextile Mars. A GREAT day for editing, revisions, and other types of rework.

May 23-24: Venus sextile Saturn. A great day to look for or approach a mentor at work, someone who can share their wealth of experience and help you grow professionally.

May 24: Mars enters Aries. Ahhh! Nice! Mars is super strong in his own sign. In June, Mars and Jupiter both will be traveling through Aries, boosting the enterprising spirit and new business starts.

May 28-30: Mars conjunct Jupiter (exact May 29). Generally it would be a great day for athletic competitions or business, but we’re in the last quarter Moon and Mercury is retrograde - not so great for new beginnings. Do tap into this amazing powerhouse of celestial energy if you need to drive something to completion though.

Health and Healing (dates for Pacific to Eastern Time):

May 15: Venus conjunct Chiron a few hours before the Full Moon in Scorpio. An excellent opportunity to release any feelings of unworthiness or a negative body image. Cautions This Month (dates for Pacific to Eastern Time):

April 25-May 20: Eclipse Season

Traditional astrology recommends avoiding major decisions during the eclipse season, as new information can come to life that will change your course anyway. We can also feel edgier than usual, and prone to act out of emotion or too fast.

This will be particularly true leading up the Lunar Eclipse on May 15/16, since it’s a tense Full Moon. The Sun and the Moon are square Saturn and the nodes, and Venus is conjunct Chiron. There could be an unsettling or depressing development that comes to light.  It’s a somber energy, highlighting limitations or challenges to push through.

May 6-14: Mercury turns retrograde on May 11. Read the fine print and double-check all important plans and documents. Most Mercury-retrograde related mishaps happen a few days before and after it changes direction.

May 16-17: Mars conjunct Neptune. A low energy day. Physical vitality is lowered. Don’t overschedule.
