Mercury Retrograde: You Have the Power to Rewrite Your Story

I remember my high school years in Russia. One September, on the first day back, I went to the school library to pick up my set of textbooks — provided free to students each year, to be returned at the end of the term.

The set was missing a history textbook, which I pointed out to the librarian. She peered at me through her glasses (a librarian to the core!) "They are rewriting them in Moscow," she said. "You will get one in a couple of months". It was the first year of glasnost and perestroika — and yes, I'm dating myself. 😊

A wide-eyed teenager that I was, I walked out shaking my head. How can they be rewriting history? It either happened, or it didn't!

As an adult, I know that while facts remain facts, our interpretation of them can shift — sometimes dramatically — depending on the political or cultural lens of the moment.

And if entire nations can rewrite history, we can certainly rewrite the stories we tell about our own lives. It's all a matter of perspective.

Finding a New Perspective through Your Astrological Chart

We are born with so many energies — and narratives — available to us, all visible through our natal chart. Sadly, we often get "locked" into one particular energy, and it begins defining the story we tell ourselves about our life. It's like boarding a train headed somewhere we never wanted to go, and not knowing how to get off.

But we are all complex and beautiful human beings, with the ability to tap into other energies available to us — and in doing so, redefine our story, and our future.

Consider someone with a challenging Neptune energy in their chart. Their dominant script might be "love means sacrifice" — and before long, they've quietly given up their own needs for the sake of their partner. Resentment builds slowly. They are unhappy, but they keep giving.

Then one day, their partner leaves for someone else. "How can that be? I gave you everything." It's a classic Neptune pattern: the giver who becomes the victim.

Two years later, they're in another relationship — and the pattern repeats.

But what if they had leaned into a different energy — say, a Mercury-Mars trine also present in their chart? That energy is perfectly capable of expressing needs and convictions clearly. What might their life look like if they had tapped into that voice instead?

A Personal Story: Redefining my Saturn

It took me 17 years to become a mother — a journey marked by many rounds of IVF, many dark moments, and profound loss along the way.

For a long time, the voice of the challenging Sun-Saturn square in my natal chart played on a loop in my head:

"My body failed me. How could I have failed at something that comes so naturally to everyone else?"

Then one day, I was at lunch with a group of fellow coaching certification students — a table full of people trained to ask good questions. My daughter had been born by then, and I found myself sharing some of my story.

"Wow," said one of the women at the table. "You must have really wanted to become a mom."

I paused.

"Actually… wanting to be a mother wasn't what drove me through all of it," I said. "Now that she's here, she means the world to me — I love being her mom. But the deeper truth is something else entirely.

My husband is older than I am. The thought of him being gone one day, and having nothing left of him in this world but memories — I couldn't bear it. This child is a living expression of our love. A love that has survived so much. I didn't want it to disappear with the two of us."

Silence fell over the table.

Then one of the men said quietly: "I only hope I find someone who loves me like that."

And just like that, I saw it clearly. My story was never about years of failure. It was a love story — one so enduring it moves mountains. If there was ever a child born out of true love, it is my daughter.

When You Re-Write Your Story, New Possibilities Flow

"My parents didn't love me enough" becomes "I wonder what inner struggles my parents were carrying." Our inner child begins to heal when we step into compassion — for them, and for ourselves.

"I'm such a failure. Everyone else is doing so much better" becomes "Everyone's path unfolds in its own time. The setbacks I've lived through are building something in me I can't yet see."

"Love means sacrifice" becomes "In a true partnership, both people matter equally."

When you shift the story, your world shifts with it. You're no longer defined by a narrative you never consciously chose. New people, new opportunities, new possibilities — they begin to find you.

Working with Your Natal Chart to Shift Your Perspective

Your natal chart is your soul's map — a blueprint of every energy available to you in this lifetime. If you find yourself stuck in a story that no longer serves you, the chart is one of the most powerful places to look for a way out.

Looking back, I wish I had recognized sooner that I was expressing the shadow side of my Sun-Saturn square. What if I had thanked it instead — for the extraordinary perseverance it gave me when I needed it most?

What if I had leaned into my Sun-Mars energy? "I can do this. I won't give up."

Or my Sun-Neptune? "You've been carrying something heavy. You're doing the best you can. Give yourself some grace."

At the time I'm writing this post, Mercury is retrograde.  Stop worrying about technology glitches and scheduling mishaps (even though I've seen a fair share of them during Mercury Rx).  Start tapping into the way Mercury Retrograde can help you. It's the perfect time to shift your perspective.

That shift — from self-criticism to self-understanding — was one of the biggest aha moments of my life. And I've watched it happen for so many clients since. When you explore the range of energies available to you, everything changes.

If this resonates with you, I'd love to explore your chart with you.
